European Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum

The Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum is taking place on 27 May 2024, on the green campus of Breda University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands.

This Forum will discuss the key catalysts and bottlenecks for international and national sustainable tourism mobility, and will set the first steps in establishing a roadmap for sustainable tourism mobility (in the Netherlands).

Get inspired by the stories of the frontrunners in sustainable mobility. Are you a representative of tourism, a transport sector stakeholder involved in sustainable development of the tourism and travel industry, public authority on European, national and regional level, industry player, start-up or do you work at a university? Then this symposium suits you perfectly!

The Forum will be split into 3 sessions:

  • Long-haul tourism mobility - This session will delve into the realities and challenges of decarbonising the aviation industry and its profound impacts on tourism in the face of climate change. It will explore the prerequisites to unlock the full potential of rail and coach transport for tourism, and how to make them viable and efficient modes for European travel. In addition, discover the strategies and considerations necessary to realise sustainable development of the tourism industry towards a greener and more resilient future.
  • Local tourism mobility - This session will look into the pivotal role of consumers in shaping the evolving landscape of sustainable tourism mobility needs and a transition towards sustainable urban mobility. It will scrutinise the responsibilities and necessary actions from various tourism mobility stakeholders and review the dependence of local tourism and leisure on car transport. Finally, it will explore how to pave the way forward by seamlessly integrating rail, public transport, walking, cycling, and electromobility into the local tourism mobility offering and wider urban and rural mobility planning.
  • Business mobility - This session will break down the barriers between business travel and leisure tourism by identifying current shared challenges and opportunities, as well as opportunities for mutual learning and collaboration between these traditionally distinct realms.  It will use the film and media industry as a compelling case study to delve into the possibilities offered by modern technology to reduce carbon emissions associated with business travel. It will also discuss an inspiring story from the Travel Smart Campaign that has successfully brought the impact of corporate travel and long-haul flying into the public sphere. By setting benchmarks on company travel emissions and promoting transparency, the campaign incentivises change and provides a roadmap for tracking progress.
