Villo! bike sharing relieves public transport in Brussels (Belgium)

After an initial small-scale and unsuccessful attempt to install a bike sharing system in the city of Brussels, a new and improved scheme called Villo! was introduced in 2008 to cover the Brussels Capital Region. Villo! has substantially increased bicycle use in Brussels and is very much appreciated by its users.

Testing a mobility credits scheme: “virtuous kilometres” by bike in Bologna (Italy)

As part of the CIVITAS MIMOSA project, the city of Bologna has launched a pilot project called “Bologna città in Bici”. The initiative is based on a reward mechanism for citizens that decide to shift from cars to bicycle, for at least some of their weekly trips.

Hotel bike rental scheme for Graz, Austria

As partner in the project BICY and in cooperation with the City of Graz, Bicycle, a socio-economic non-profit company, established a hotel bike rental scheme with selected, innovative hotels in Graz. Within this scheme 20 pedelecs were rented out, free of charge, to hotel guests. The aim behind this pilot action was to determine the best strategy for such a rental system that could also be used by follower hotels.

Learning about sustainable travel in Bucharest through Active Access (Romania)

In order to render urban mobility in Bucharest sustainable, during the 3 years it lasted, the Active Access (AA) project paid particular attention to the future generation. A Traffic Snake Game and a High School Info Day were supported by a walking audit, 2 workshops and a street event, all focusing on the same issue of pupils’ mobility.

Pavement absorbs nitrogen oxides in Nowa Sol, Poland

In 2012, the city of Nowa Sól ordered a new bike lane and pavement with paving stones made of ecological cement that absorbs harmful nitrogen oxide from car exhaust. The town is the first place in Poland to use this new technology.

Perugia’s Minimetrò transit system (Italy)

In 2008 Perugia inaugurated Minimetrò: a light transit system which connects the outskirts to the centre in less than 10 minutes over 3 km of rail, including a 1.5 kilometre viaduct. The Minimetrò line has 7 stops, with shuttles passing every 10 minutes and a single ride ticket costing €1.50.
