Horizon 2020 to fund activities for smart, green and integrated transport

By Editor / Updated: 01 Aug 2014
The new Horizon 2020 Framework Programme is intended to be one of the primary drivers to create new jobs and growth in Europe. Smart, green and integrated transport is one of the areas that the funding will go to.
Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, is a flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness. It will run from 2014 to 2020 with a budget of just over €70 billion. The first round of calls under the smart, green and integrated transport challenge has been published here.

The Proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing Horizon 2020 - The Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2014-2020) outlines the societal challenges that transport should help tackle. These respond directly to the policy priorities and societal challenges identified in the Europe 2020 strategy.

With regards to mobility, the proposal stresses the need for the following lines of activities:
  • activities that support research, development and demonstrations of alternative fuels and mobile energy from secure, clean and efficient sources
  • activities to minimise transport’s impact on climate and the environment by improving resource-efficient transport that respects the environment
  • activities that reconcile the growing mobility needs with improvements for better mobility, less congestion, more safety and security
  • activities to reinforce the competitiveness and global leadership of the European transport industry
  • socio-economic research and forward looking activities for policy making to promote innovation and meet the challenges raised by transport is another area of activities

An Information Day under the theme of Smart, Green and Integrated transport will take place in Brussels on 18 December 2013.
