The council of Esplugues has unanimously approved its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) after a plenary session earlier this month.
The mains aims of the SUMP is to improve pedestrian infrastructure, increase cycling facilities and promote public transport.
Council officials in Esplugues, a municipality of the Barcelona metropolitan area, hope that the SUMP will control and reduce the levels of noise and air pollution caused by traffic.
Existing technological advances will be used to improve the overall mobility system and control traffic.
As part of the plan, the city will carry out some 60 actions during the next four years and try to combine principles such as sustainability, take into account the guarantee of quality of life, and ensure the recovery of public space.
It will also guarantee the dynamism of the local economy by maintaining the attraction of commercial shopping streets.
Draft approval for the SUMP was received in March 2016, but it was only put forward for full approval to the council after it went to the Metropolitan Transport Authority, and the Government of Catalonia’s General Direction of Environmental Quality and Directorate-General for Environmental Policy for feedback.
